Gdzie serce, tam twoj dom
Gdzie serce, tam twoj dom
Immigrants from Poland began arriving in the Milwaukee area in the 1860s, searching not only for economic opportunity but religious and political freedom. Eager to preserve their Faith, language and culture, they constructed their first church in the city in 1866 which was to be followed by eighteen more.
John and Anna Smallshaw have roots both in Milwaukee and in Poland. Some 15 years ago we embarked on a project to research the history of the 19 Polish churches in Milwaukee, all constructed through the incredible sacrifice of Milwaukee's Polish immigrant community.
We are partnering with a local publisher, MECAH, who specialize in documenting Milwaukee's ethnic history. MECAH will be supplying the photographs to bring the book alive. We don't have a firm publication date at this point but we expect sometime in late 2024.We are very pleased to work with this highly regarded publisher; please help us to preserve the history of these beautiful churches! https://www.mecahmilwaukee.com/NonFiction.html
Most of these beautiful churches now find themselves in distressed neighborhoods and with declining attendance. Your support at the parish level can help stem the closure and consolidation of these historic monuments. Please see the "The Churches" section for a listing of the churches and photographs.
